**Middleton Oak Memory**

The Middleton Oak has stood beside the Ashley River for centuries, long before my own story became connected to it. It is one of the great living trees of the Lowcountry, a witness to generations of lives that have unfolded beneath its branches.

I was married beneath this oak many years ago. Since then, the tree has changed. Lightning has scarred it. Disease claimed one of its great limbs—the very limb beneath which we exchanged our vows. Time has reshaped it, just as time reshapes all of us.

Yet each time I return, I feel the same quiet recognition.

There is a moment when I see the tree and something inside me says, *"You're still here, friend, and I love you."*

This image is less about documenting a place than honoring a relationship—one built through years of returning, remembering, and witnessing the changes that come with a life well lived. The form changes. The story deepens. The oak remains.
