Standing beside the Ashley River at Middleton Place, the Middleton Oak is one of the great living trees of the South Carolina Lowcountry. For centuries it has weathered storms, changing seasons, and the passage of generations, its massive branches reaching outward over the landscape it has long called home.

I have returned to this tree many times over the years. What first drew me to it was its beauty and scale, but what keeps bringing me back is something harder to describe. Like an old friend, it feels both familiar and enduring—a reminder that some things remain even as life changes around them.

This photograph celebrates the oak itself: its strength, character, and remarkable presence. Scarred by time yet still thriving, it stands as a testament to resilience, continuity, and the quiet dignity of age.
